How it works: Simple, Safe, and Clinician-Led Doxycycline PEP (DoxyPEP).
How It works
Our Doxycycline PEP service is designed to make protecting your sexual health fast, discreet, and medically safe. Every prescription is reviewed by a UK-registered prescriber and dispensed by a GPhC-registered pharmacy — no shortcuts, no unverified medicines.
Answer a few questions about your health, allergies, and medical history.
Our secure form only takes 2–3 minutes and helps us ensure doxycycline is right for you.
– Fully encrypted and GDPR compliant
– Clinician-designed questions based on BASHH guidance
A qualified prescriber reviews your consultation form the same day.
If doxycycline PEP is suitable, a private prescription is issued.
If it’s not suitable, you’ll be given safe next steps or a referral to your local NHS sexual health service.
Your prescription is sent electronically to our partner distance-selling pharmacy (DSP).
The pharmacy dispenses and labels your medicine in line with the Human Medicines Regulations 2012, then sends it via tracked Royal Mail or courier.
– Secure packaging – no external reference to medication
– Batch numbers recorded for safety and recall compliance
Most orders are dispatched the same or next working day after approval.
You’ll receive a tracking link so you know when to expect your delivery.
Every package includes a patient information leaflet with clear instructions on:
– How to take doxycycline for PEP
– Common side effects and what to do
– When to contact a clinician
You’ll also receive a monthly reminder to complete your next review before a repeat prescription is issued.
1. How to Take Doxycycline for PEP
• Take 200mg (two tablets) as soon as possible (within 24–72 hours after unprotected sex).
• Then take 100mg (one tablet) once daily for 3 days.
• Always follow the label instructions from your pharmacy.
• Swallow tablets with water and remain upright for 30 minutes after taking them.
• Take with food if you feel nauseous.
👉 Never exceed the prescribed dose and don’t share your medicine with others.
2. Common Side Effects
Most people tolerate doxycycline well.
Common side effects may include:
• Mild stomach upset or nausea
• Heartburn or indigestion
• Diarrhoea
• Sensitivity to sunlight (sunburn more easily)
• Vaginal or oral thrush
💡 Tip: Use sunscreen and avoid prolonged sun exposure while taking doxycycline.
3. Rare or Serious Side Effects
Stop taking doxycycline and seek urgent medical help if you experience:
• Severe rash or itching
• Swelling of the face, lips, or throat
• Difficulty breathing
• Severe headache or blurred vision
• Yellowing of the skin or eyes (possible liver problems)
If symptoms are severe, call 999. For milder reactions, contact your GP, pharmacist, or NHS 111.
4. Who Should Not Take Doxycycline
Do not take Doxycycline PEP if you:
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding
• Have had a severe allergic reaction to tetracycline antibiotics
• Have significant liver or kidney disease
• Are under 18 years old
5. Medicine Interactions
Tell your prescriber if you take:
• Warfarin or other blood thinners
• Antiepileptic medicines (phenytoin, carbamazepine)
• Isotretinoin for acne
• Oral contraceptives – doxycycline can reduce pill effectiveness (use additional protection)
• Antacids or supplements containing calcium, magnesium, iron, or zinc — these reduce absorption (take doxycycline 2 hours before or after).
6. Alcohol and Doxycycline
Moderate alcohol use is unlikely to cause issues, but heavy drinking can reduce the medicine’s effectiveness and increase side effects. Avoid alcohol during your short course where possible.
7. Additional Safety Information
• Store below 25°C, away from moisture and direct sunlight.
• Keep out of reach of children.
• Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
