Copper Coil

The Copper Coil, also known as “IUD” or Non-Hormonal Coil contains no hormones. The Copper Coil is over 99% effective and works by preventing implantation and being toxic to sperm and eggs.

Information

A Copper Coil, is a small contraceptive device that is put into the uterus (womb).
This requires a non-surgical procedure. Anaesthetic is given to every person having a coil inserted.

  • Heavier, longer, more painful periods
  • Risk of it falling out
  • Risk of infection
  • Risk of perforation (1-2 out of 1000 people having a coil fitted)
  • Risk of failure
  • Fertility returns to normal once removed
  • The following may mean you are not suitable for the Combined Oral Contraceptive:

    You are:

    • Less than 4 weeks Postpartum
    • Have had Postpartum/Abortion Sepsis

    You have:

    • had a complicated organ transplant
    • Known long QT syndromes
    • Unexplained vaginal bleeding
    • Gestational Trophoblastic Disease with decreasing or persistently elevated hCG levels or malignant disease
    • Cervical cancer
    • Endometrial Cancer
    • Distortion of the uterine cavity
    • Current Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
    • Current Chlamydia or Gonorrhoea
    • HIV with a CD4 of less than 200
    • Pelvic Tuberculosis (TB)

    A Copper Coil can be used for 10 years if under 40 years old.

    A Copper coil can be used until Menopause has been reached if fitted aged 40 years or over
