The Hormonal Coil also known as “Mirena” contains one hormone; Progesterone. The Hormone Coil thickens cervical mucous to prevent sperm from reaching the womb and thins the lining of the womb. Some women do not produce an egg with the Hormone Coil

A Hormonal Coil, is a small contraceptive device that is put into the uterus (womb).
This requires a non-surgical procedure. Anaesthetic is given to every person having a coil inserted.
The following may mean you are not suitable for the Hormonal Coil:
You are:
- Less than 4 weeks Postpartum
- Have had Postpartum/Abortion Sepsis
You have:
- Had a complicated organ transplant
- Known long QT syndromes
- Unexplained vaginal bleeding
- Gestational Trophoblastic Disease with decreasing or persistently elevated hCG levels or malignant disease
- Cervical cancer
- Endometrial Cancer
- A history of Ischaemic Heart Disease
- Had a stroke
- Severe (Decompensated) Cirrhosis
- Hepatocellular adenoma
- Hepatocellular Carcinoma
Mirena is licenced for contraception for 8 years if inserted under the age of 45 years old.
Mirena is licenced until age 55 years old if inserted after the age of 45 years old
Mirena is licenced for management of heavy menstrual bleeding for 8 years (unless bleeding becomes heavy)
Mirena is licenced for HRT for 5 years
