The Contraceptive Ring is inserted into the vagina and left in place for three weeks before being removed for a week to allow for a breakthrough bleed.

The following may mean you are not suitable for the Contraceptive Ring:

You are:

  • taking a medication that interacts with the Contraceptive Patch
  • breastfeeding and the baby is less than 6 weeks old
  • not breastfeeding and the baby is less than 3 week old
  • not breastfeeding, the baby is less than 6 weeks old and you have other risk factors
  • over 35 years old and you smoke or have stopped smoking in the last year
  • significantly overweight
  • immobile

You have:

  • had a complicated organ transplant
  • high blood pressure
  • had Venous Thromboembolism (VTE)
  • a first degree relative under the age of 45 has had a VTE
  • a Thrombogenic Mutation
  • complicated valvular or congenital heart disease
  • Cardiomyopathy with impaired cardiac function
  • Atrial Fibrillation
  • Migraines
  • had breast cancer, you have the breast cancer gene or an undiagnosed breast lump
  • Diabetic Nephropathy, Retinopathy, Neuropathy or other vascular disease
  • current or medically treated gallbladder disease
  • combined contraceptive method associated Cholestasis
  • Hepatitis
  • severe Cirrhosis
  • certain liver tumours
  • Positive antiphospholipid antibodies

The Contraceptive Ring is inserted into the vagina and left in place for three weeks before being removed for a week to allow for a breakthrough bleed. An initial three-month trial is recommended to ensure that the Contraceptive Ring is suitable for you. After this period, you can continue to use the Contraceptive Ring for as long as you wish.
